Visa applicants being turned away at the U.S. Embassy in Europe

When a visa is refused by the US Consulate?

Visa Applicants Turned Away at U.S. Embassies in Europe — Why It Happens & What To Do

Common reasons

  • Appointment/entry problems: Wrong day/time, wrong consulate, missing passport, no DS-160 confirmation, or arriving late. Security bans bulky items.
  • Document gaps (221(g)): Missing I-20/SEVIS fee (students), employer letter (B-1), ties evidence, I-864/tax docs (immigrant visas), police certificates, or panel physician medical results not received.
  • Legal refusals:
    • 212(a) inadmissibility: Prior overstays, misrepresentation, certain crimes, medical issues. Some require waivers.
    • Security/Admin Processing (221(g)): Additional checks (a “refusal” until cleared).
  • Rebook through the post’s AIS/USvisa-info site; confirm the correct embassy/consulate and appointment type. Bring passport, DS-160 barcode, fee receipt, and supporting documents. Arrive early, travel light.

If you received a 221(g)

  • The case is pending, not denied. Follow the instruction sheet precisely, upload to CEAC if requested, and submit one complete response. Track status weekly; avoid duplicate emails.

If you were refused under 214(b)

  • Reapply only if facts have changed (new job, travel history, assets, school enrollment). Prepare clear evidence of temporary intent and strong ties (employment contracts, lease/mortgage, family obligations). Practice concise answers.

Immigrant visa tips

  • Ensure you’re “documentarily qualified” at NVC before interview. Bring originals for civil docs, I-864 with tax transcripts/W-2s, valid medical, and any court dispositions. For prior overstays/misrepresentation, plan I-601A/I-601 or 212(i)/212(h) waivers in advance.

Expedites & emergencies

  • Posts may expedite for urgent medical care, funerals, students with imminent start dates, or business necessity—submit proof and a tight travel plan.
