USCIS extends green card validity extension to 24 months for green card renewals

USCIS Extends Validity of Expired Permanent Resident Cards

USCIS Extends Green Card Validity by 24 Months for Renewals — What It Means

USCIS now automatically extends the validity of most expiring or expired 10-year green cards for 24 months when you file Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card). The I-797C receipt notice you receive after filing serves as proof of this extension and, together with your expired card, proves you still have permanent resident status while the renewal is pending.

Who gets the 24-month extension

  • Regular (unconditional) permanent residents who file an I-90 to renew an expiring card or replace a lost/damaged card.
  • Applies to paper and online filings made on or after USCIS implemented the policy; older receipts may be reissued with updated language at USCIS’s discretion.

Who does not rely on this rule

  • Conditional residents with 2-year cards use I-751 (marriage) or I-829 (EB-5). Their extensions are different (and currently longer); do not file I-90 to “renew” a 2-year card.

Using your documents

  • Work (Form I-9): Your expired green card + I-797C showing the 24-month extension is acceptable as a List A document. Provide both to your employer’s HR.
  • Travel: You may return to the U.S. with your expired card + I-797C and a valid passport. Airlines and CBP recognize the combo as evidence of LPR status.
  • DMV/SSA/Benefits: Bring both documents; some agencies verify through SAVE. Allow extra time.

If you need proof urgently

  • If you haven’t received the receipt, or your documents are not sufficient for a specific need (e.g., long international trip, mortgage closing), request an ADIT (I-551) stamp in your passport through a USCIS field office appointment.

Filing tips that prevent delays

  1. File 6–12 months before card expiration.
  2. Use the current I-90 edition; sign and pay the correct fee.
  3. Include name-change or biographic documents if applicable.
  4. Monitor your USCIS online account for biometrics reuse or appointment.

Bottom line: The 24-month automatic extension keeps you work-authorized, travel-ready, and fully documented while your I-90 is processed—no gap in your lawful permanent resident status.
