DHS announces registration process for TPS Cameroon designation.

The Department of Homeland Security posted for public inspection a Federal Register notice on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Cameroon. The notice gives information about how to register for TPS under Cameroon’s choices. There is an 18-month choosing of Cameroon for TPS. The registration process will start on June 7, 2022. All individuals who wish to request TPS under the designation of Cameroon must file an application. To qualify for Cameroon TPS designation, applicants must show their continuous residence in the U.S. since June 7, 2022. Those arriving in the U.S. after April 14, 2022 are not eligible for TPS under this designation. USCIS estimates that about 11,700 individuals may be eligible for TPS under the Cameroon designation.

TPS Cameroon designation

TPS — Cameroon: what happened, who’s affected, and what to do next

Cameroon was initially designated for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) on June 7, 2022, and DHS later extended and redesignated that designation through June 7, 2025.

On June 4, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security announced it would terminate the TPS designation for Cameroon; the termination becomes effective August 4, 2025 (60 days after the Federal Register notice).

Who this affects

  • Cameroonian nationals and certain stateless persons who were TPS beneficiaries or who registered under the redesignation/extension.
  • Family members whose work authorization or immigration planning depended on the TPS beneficiary’s status.

Immediate steps to take

  1. Confirm TPS/EAD dates and save all USCIS/DHS notices.
  2. Preserve copies of EADs, I-94s, Form I-821 filings, and receipts.
  3. Avoid international travel without counsel.
  4. Evaluate and pursue alternative immigration options now.
  5. If planning departure, coordinate voluntary-departure reporting options as appropriate.

Documents to assemble

  • EAD cards, receipts, I-94, I-797 notices, proof of continuous residence, passports.
  • Any pending petitions or applications (I-130, I-485, asylum, PERM/I-140).
  • Criminal disposition records if applicable (for screening before pursuing other relief).

Timing & transition notes

DHS’s Federal Register notice set the formal termination and the 60-day transition window; TPS benefits associated with Cameroon’s designation will end on August 4, 2025, unless a court or agency action changes that schedule.

FAQs

Q: Will litigation stop DHS?
A: Possibly — courts can block or delay terminations, but recent appellate rulings permitted the government to proceed while litigation continues. Monitor developments and consult counsel.

Q: What should I do first?
A: Save and organize your TPS/EAD documents, and schedule a consultation with counsel to evaluate alternate immigration paths and next steps.
