More Chinese Migrants Are Coming to the United States on Foot, Officials Say

NBC News reports that a growing number of Chinese immigrants are crossing into the United States without papers. They often take harrowing journeys through several countries and modes of transport. Moreover, they use social media as their guide. CBP reported that in the past five months, at least 4,300 undocumented Chinese migrants have been apprehended crossing the southern border. This amount is more than double the number for all of the previous year. A growing number of Chinese migrants are crossing into the U.S. without papers. Even as they struggled to find work, Chinese immigrants were also fighting for their lives. Immigrants from China had to answer more questions than immigrants from other countries because of the Chinese Exclusion Act. The questions used in interviews at Angel Island were not the same for every immigrant.
